Yesterday I did probably one of the most idiotic things I've done in a while.
At the bank drive through, depositing a couple of paltry checks - as I have done many, many times before - I apparently forgot how to use the canister that you send through the tube.
Here's how it went. I got the checks all ready, pulled the canister out, opened the end, dropped my pen, set down the canister, fished up my pen, opened the end of the canister and put the deposit slip in. (The deposit slip is fatter than the checks - this will be important later).
I put a check in.
It fell on the floor.
I tried another.
Also on the floor.
And again. And again.
It was is if everything was magnetic and the canister and the checks had the same polarity and just kept jumping away from each other.
The deposit slip stayed in there, but the checks wouldn't. What the...??
Can you see my mistake? Do you know what I did?
I'll run it down for you again:
Get canister out of tube, open the end, drop the pen, set down the canister, fish up the pen, open the end of the canister and put the deposit slip in.
I'm sure you see it, right?
Ok, with cheaty bold type:
Get the canister out of the tube, open the end, drop the pen, set the canister down, fish up the pen, open the end of the canister and put the deposit slip in.
This canister opens at both ends.
Yup, I first opened one end, got distracted, set the thing down, picked it back up again, completely failed to see the end was already opened (because I was now holding it upside down) opened up the other end, inserted the deposit slip - which stuck to the sides of the canister because it is really too fat for it - and proceeded to feed the checks into the top while they promptly fell out the bottom.
What is really galling is that it took me 4 tries before I noticed what I'd done.
I just kept sticking 'em in there like a toddler dropping spaghetti over the side of a highchair.
What's worse - during this little slice of idiocy, one of the checks disappeared entirely. Just vanished into thin air. Like a conjuring trick.
And I still can't find it. I went through my van and my purse from top to bottom today - took about an hour and made a thorough job of it.
So now I have a lovely organized purse and a clean car.
But I'm out 45 bucks.
Doh!!
